 In
recent years I and a few colleagues have been placing a major
emphasis on recovering Scripture for the purposes of Christian
spiritual formation. This work has included a written resource
we are calling the Renovaré Spiritual Formation Bible.
And we are presently putting together "The With-God Life:
The Dynamics of Scripture for Christian Spiritual Trans^Formation,"
a Renovaré International Conference to be held June 19-22,
2005, at the Adams Mark Hotel in Denver, Colorado. Renovaré
and a number of churches and Christian organizations are seeking
Partners for this conference work.
When I first began writing about spiritual formation many
years ago the soul hunger in people was so very obvious and
the resources so very meager. Since that time a publishing
avalanche has occurred on the subject—some of it genuinely
helpful, some less than helpful. But throughout there has
remained a huge gap, a gap that if not filled will seriously
undermine all the gains that have been made. The gap I
refer to is a thoughtful attempt at looking at the Bible through
the lens of Christian spiritual formation.
The desperate need today is for a richer, fuller understanding
of the relevance of Scripture for daily living, for all people—lay
and ordained—in the Church.
• We
need a view of the Bible that will help us experience Scripture
as living and active, forming and transforming.
• We
need a view of the Bible that will lead us step by step into
the glorious and terrifying "with-God life" which weaves its
way throughout Scripture.
• We
need a view of the Bible that will aid us in seeing the great
panorama of Divine interaction with the People of God throughout
history, and that will invite us into this ongoing story.
• We
need a view of the Bible that will draw us irresistibly into
the biblical drama of love and terror and pity and pain and
wonder until the biblical witness becomes all over autobiographic
of us.
For three days in June 2005 in Denver there will be plenary
sessions and workshops and informal conversations and much
more, all addressing one primary question: How does the
Bible serve as the primary written resource for transforming
our hearts and minds into the very nature of the heart and
mind of God? We think there is much work to be done on
this topic, and that our time in 2005 will further significantly
the understanding of many.
The
Denver-metro-based International Conference Steering Committee
is seeking church and Christian organization Partners, that
this event might be as helpful as possible for lay and ordained
folks at churches throughout Colorado and the United States
and the world. Will you join us as a Partner? I
hope so.
