THE JESUS WAY Workshops

THE JESUS WAY Workshop Tracks

THE JESUS WAY Workshop Tracks are primarily, though not exclusively, for those who have been working with the RENOVARÉ ideas for some time and hoping for a resource that will help them contextualize the idea of intentional, lifelong discipleship in a vocation or field of endeavor. Addressing the areas of the arts, early childhood Christian formation, the workplace, congregational life and leadership, discipleship as a lifelong activity, the shift to a postmodern culture, and Christian spiritual direction, the conveners of these eight Tracks have all been for a number of years applying The Jesus Way to their own pursuits. Each Track includes four unique presentations, conversation, dinner on Sunday, and lunch on Wednesday. And, in addition to the Tracks, given the overall conference scheduling, you will be able to attend all conference General Sessions and two Individual Workshops (on Monday and Tuesday afternoons) as well as all Track presentations. A $99 Extra Early Registration, $109 Early Registration, or $119 Regular Registration fee applies to participation in a Workshop Track. This additional fee includes two meals.

GUIDING CHILDREN IN CHARACTER AND SPIRITUAL FORMATION: The Jesus Way for Young People
Track Leader: Vernie Schorr
Track Description:
Exploring the relationship of character formation and the development of the spiritual life in children, this track is designed for parents, children's ministers, teachers, and advocates of children who desire to guide character and spiritual formation in the children they serve. Spiritual and character formation in children as well as in adults requires the intentional practice of spiritual disciplines, which includes introducing them to the person of God through Jesus and an ongoing, intimate relationship. The practice of spiritual disciplines with children will be explained, and ideas for developing the disciplines of meditation, prayer, and simplicity provided. Session topics will include:
• the process of character formation and transformation
• how children think and learn how to develop character language
• ways of using character language effectively
questioning technique

FORMATIONAL AND MISSIONAL: The Jesus Way for Church Life and Leadership
Track Leader: Todd Hunter

The world is changing right underneath our feet. Todd Hunter began to notice this in the mid-1990's through his interactions with young church planters and evangelists. These young Christian leaders were asking a completely different set of questions than the ones Todd asked as a young leader in the 1970's. More importantly, the people they were trying to reach for Christ had a different set of issues with the faith. Simply put, in response, mission and leadership have both been going "spiritual"—that is, spiritual formation. While having always been right, and the true goal of Christianity, it is now crucial, strategic, and indispensable. In this track we will both come to terms with this social change and learn new effective responses rooted in The Jesus Way.
• Session 1 - The Jesus Way in Contemporary Society
• Session 2 - Spiritual Formation as the Key Component of Leadership
• Session 3 - Leadership—Creating Places of Realized Potential
• Session 4 - Mission Goes Formational

CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS : The Jesus Way and the Arts
Track Leaders: Michelle Brown, Tina Karagulian, Glenna Sabin, Enedina Vasquez
Track Description:
Four unique presentations will connect the arts to the devotional life of individuals and congregations, helping them discern The Jesus Way through creativity as well as thinking.

Session 1 - Poetry and The Jesus Way - Enedina Vasquez
This workshop will bring out the poet in everyone, gently guiding participants in ways to access their deepest thoughts and feelings in order to create poetry that will express faith, hope, and love for God's creation. Poetry as a spiritual discipline will be explored and there will be opportunities to write original poetry.

Session 2 - Music and The Jesus Way - Michelle Brown
With thoughts on approaching each of the spiritual disciplines from a musical point of view, explore some of the ways music can enhance and deepen your personal devotional life, as well as take your small group or entire congregation into a new awareness of God's presence.

Session 3 - Movement and The Jesus Way - Glenna Sabin
God made us to move and breathe. Whether standing, sitting, or confined to bed, you can develop skills in movement to feed your spirit and nourish your soul, growing in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Methods learned can be used in silence, with written or personal prayers, in church worship, or with any music that kindles your Spirit.

Session 4 - Visual Arts and The Jesus Way - Tina Karagulian
After writing personal prayers and participating in corporate worship, participants will create their own prayer altars as a window into the practice, as with the artists of old and today, of using paint, wood, metal, and other materials to make our prayers visible.

PROFITS AND PROPHETS: The Jesus Way in Business
Track Leader: Dave DeRoos

Track Description: What constitutes a “successful” business according to biblical values and principles? Is it possible to excel in enterprise, developing a work environment that encourages Christian spiritual formation, and breathing life into employees, customers, and vendors? Can a business leader seek first the kingdom of God, and have everything else needed? Entrepreneurs, business owners, managers, consultants, and others in the world of commerce and nonprofit activity each day are endeavoring to live an adventure of faith, looking for God’s provision, protection, and direction, in the midst of risk and uncertainty. Join us as we give thought to God’s purpose for work, the character qualities of Christian business and ministry leadership, and the significance of Matthew 6:24 in the arena of enterprise, where we are told that we cannot serve both God and money. Idealism and pragmatism can walk hand-in-hand as businesses are used as platforms to "preach the gospel at all times, and use words when necessary" (St. Francis of Assisi).

A CURRICULUM FOR CHRISTLIKENESS: How to Make the Jesus Way My Way
Track Leader: James Bryan Smith

Track Description: Originally developed as the Apprentice curriculum, this substantive, highly practical approach to Christlikeness infuses teaching about Kingdom vision and values with spiritual disciplines for individual and group use. Author and RENOVARÉ Team Member James Bryan Smith has decoded the spiritual DNA of his mentors Dallas Willard, Richard Foster, and the classic spiritual writers in creating an approach built upon exchanging our earthly core narratives with the narratives of Jesus, accompanied by the practice of spiritual disciplines specifically targeted to produce deep and lasting change. In this workshop you will learn how to engage in this curriculum in your own life, and in your church.

LIFE IN A POST-SECULAR CULTURE: The Jesus Way for Media, Arts, Government, and Education
Track Leaders: James Catford and Ann Holt

Track Description: America appears to be following Europe into a post-secular and post-Christian future. Come and experience how your Christian colleagues in Britain (through the British Bible Society there) are facing up to the challenge of falling church attendance, cynicism amongst young people, and hostility in the media. Join us for a fast-moving, interactive seminar track including movies, ads, and newly commissioned drama to explore the authentic Jesus Way in the key drivers of Western culture—media, arts, politics, and education. For senior church leaders of all shapes and sizes, business professionals in all walks of life, as well as students and young adults: how DO we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? Outside the church walls, how does the
RENOVARÉ approach cash-out in the world "out there"? Or is it time for God's funeral procession to begin, in Europe and eventually in the United States?
Session 1 - Beginning: Introduction/Overview/Diagnostics/Discussion
Session 2 - Assessing: Case Studies from Western Culture
Session 3 - Acting: Working with the Six
RENOVARÉ Streams Where You Are
Session 4 - Living: Realistic Takeaways for Churches of a New Humanity

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION: Companioned By Jesus
Track Leader: Deborah Hanus

Track Description: The Christian scriptures give us stories of Jesus companioning those he found along the way: the rich young man, the woman at the well, Nicodemus, and others. How do these stories inform our own understanding and practice of contemporary spiritual direction? We will explore these scriptural metaphors as foundations for our own practice as well as look at the historical evolution of the ministry of spiritual direction and the contemporary opportunities for an integrated faith it provides for us.
• Session 1 - To Follow More Closely: Scriptural Invitations
• Session 2 - Responding to the Signs of the Times: A Historical Perspective
• Session 3 - The Emergence of our Spiritual Direction: Contemporary Issues in Spiritual Direction
• Session 4 - Making Our Way: Practical Considerations
